It is important to gather as much information as you can together at the outset as it could save research time and money at a later stage. Remember to ask other family members what information they have. There may or may not be some truth in that family gossip or myth and they may have mementoes/documents of which you weren’t aware. Certificates, photographs, medals, school, service and work-related records can all give precious information about your family’s past. There may even be surviving letters, diaries or wills somewhere just waiting to be found.
