I am a professionally-qualified genealogist with some 15 years’ experience of tracing my own family history and carrying out research for friends, acquaintances and for the last two years for paying clients. I
Following 4 years of study, I was awarded both the Diploma in Genealogy and the Higher Certificate in Genealogical and Heraldic Studies with distinction by one of the foremost nationally-accredited organisations - the IHGS in Canterbury. I have an honours degree in French, and worked for many years in economic development, in addition to teaching courses for adults. I was recently appointed a tutor for the IHGS. I am a member of the Professional Association of Genealogists (AGRA), the Society of Genealogists, the IHGS, and several family history societies. I carry out research at the National Archives, and other archives around the country.
My home is in East Sussex and I have access to records in West Sussex,Kent and London. I have experience of researching a wide variety of records, including, amongst many others, those of the army and navy, Poor Law and non-conformist records, and court proceedings.
In the likely event, the need for research in other parts of the country emerges, I may be able to undertake it myself, or it may be more cost-effective to use a known and trusted agent in the area. I also have contacts in other countries, including Australia and New Zealand.
Over the years, I have been building my knowledge of records and record-keeping systems round the world and of different cultures and religions. For example, I have carried out research for a family with Jewish, specifically Ashkenazi ancestry as well as several histories involving non-conformist religions, in particular Methodism and the Baptist faith.
My own family history has taken me from stonemasons in planned villages in the Lowlands of Scotland to workers in the cotton mills of Lancashire, paper-making mills of Westmoreland via the woollen trade in Yorkshire and the construction of the first railways in the Midlands.
The family names I am researching are Suthurst, Roberts, Thexton, Dickens, Currie, Kego, Spalding, Holgate and Wade.
