Always remember to ask other family members what information they have. There may or may not be some truth in that family gossip or myth and they may have mementoes/documents you weren’t aware of.
What resources do you have already? Certificates, photographs, medals, school, service and work-related records can all give precious information about your family’s past. You may be very lucky and find old letters, diaries or a will.
Which family line/s would you like to explore? Obviously once research starts it can take you in many different directions and it helps if you can have some of your own ideas at the start.
If you want a history of your house how detailed would you like it to be and what aspects would you like me to explore? It would be very useful if you could have access to the title deeds, or know where they might be obtained, as these often contain important historical information.
