Extract 1
“There was a large extended family with first cousins galore on both sides spread round Elton, Jericho, Heap, Bury and Birtle. At least four Suthurst families lived within a few hundred yards of each other in Norden. Several of the children close to her in age or even younger would have had little time to be Gran’s playmate - they were already working full-time. In the 1891 census Fred, aged 12 was a weaver, Sarah Ellen, 10 a weaver’s tenter. William also 12 and his younger brother Harry were working in the bleach works near Bury. At 14, Bertha Mosley was already an “old hand” in the card room, her brother Joseph aged 11, a part-timer.” (Information drawn from censuses)
Extract 2
“Gran, Robert and Jesse were stalwarts of the chapel choir along with Wade and Theresa and other young people from Industry Street, Emmeline Clay for one. Choir practice was every Thursday and anyone who was late had to pay a fine of 1d which went to the “Choir Fund” to pay for sheet music.
